Red Seal Exam Prep?

Getting Started

XLR8ed Learning is a Canadian Red Seal exam preparation platform founded in Greater Sudbury, Ontario by Dana and Tera Marshall. Dana is a licensed Red Seal tradesperson and former college faculty member who spent years developing curriculum and assessment tools for the trades. XLR8ed Learning was built to give tradespeople across Canada a better way to prepare for one of the most important exams of their careers.

The Red Seal Program — formally known as the Interprovincial Standards Program — is a national certification standard that allows tradespeople to have their skills recognised across all Canadian provinces and territories. Passing the Red Seal exam demonstrates that your knowledge and skills meet the national standard for your trade. It is one of the most valuable credentials a tradesperson can hold.

We currently offer Red Seal exam preparation courses for Millwright, Construction Electrician, Welder, Machinist, and Industrial Electrician. A Red Seal Plumber course is in development and expected in late 2026. We are continuing to expand — our goal is to offer courses for every Red Seal trade.

Every XLR8ed Learning course includes a large bank of randomised multiple choice practice questions aligned task by task to the Red Seal Occupational Standards for your trade, detailed remediation explanations for every question, a mastery tracking system based on your rolling average, an interactive curriculum browser organised by task area, a sample quiz, and access to our Exam Report Analysis Tool. Courses are accessible on desktop and through our iOS and Android apps.

After completing your purchase on xlr8edlearning.ca, you will be automatically enrolled in the corresponding course on our Moodle learning platform at tradeexamprep.ca. You will receive an email with your login details. If you do not receive it within a few minutes of purchase, check your spam folder or contact us at client.support@xlr8edlearning.ca.

We are actively working on French language course content. Our first French course — Red Seal Millwright — is expected to be available in late 2026. French content will be accessible at xlr8edlearning.ca/fr/ when live. If you are interested in being notified when French content becomes available, contact us and we will add you to the list.

The course is accessible on any device with a modern web browser — desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. We also offer native apps for iPhone (iOS) and Android for on-the-go study. Download links are available on each trade page.

Access Durations and Pricing

We offer eleven access duration options ranging from 1 Day through to 10 Weeks, as well as the Commitment to Completion Plan. Shorter durations are designed for focused final review. Longer durations are designed for comprehensive preparation. We recommend a minimum of 4 weeks for most exam writers — see below for more detail.

Access durations are timed to the minute from the moment you enrol. If you enrol on a Friday at noon with a 4-week duration, your access ends exactly four weeks later — Friday at noon. Plan your enrolment date based on your exam date so that your access runs right up to exam day.

Enrol on the date that is the same distance from your exam as your chosen duration. If you purchase 4-week access, enrol 4 weeks before your exam date. This ensures you have full access right up to exam day without any wasted time before you begin studying.

This exam matters. Consider the value of your Red Seal certification and the cost — in time, money, and effort — of a re-attempt. We recommend a minimum of 4 weeks for most exam writers. 8 weeks gives you the best chance of achieving the 85% running average that signals genuine exam readiness. If you are concerned about running out of time, the Commitment to Completion Plan removes that risk entirely.

Once your current access duration ends, return to the trade page on xlr8edlearning.ca and purchase a new duration. Your progress, scores, and work are saved — everything picks up exactly where you left off.

Yes. We offer group discounts for groups of 10 or more enrolling in durations of 4 weeks or greater. Contact us at client.support@xlr8edlearning.ca with the details of your group and we will set you up.

We accept all major credit cards through WooPayments. Payment is processed securely at checkout on xlr8edlearning.ca.

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for our full refund policy. If you have a specific situation you would like to discuss, contact us directly at client.support@xlr8edlearning.ca and we will do our best to help.

Course and Platform

No. Reproducing official Red Seal exam questions would be unethical and we do not do it. Our questions are original — but because we align every question directly to the Red Seal Occupational Standards task areas, you will find our content covers the same knowledge and skills the real exam tests. The depth of our curriculum alignment is why our pass rates are strong.

The 85% running average tracks your performance across your last 8 attempts on any given topic. To meet the mastery threshold, you need to sustain an average of 85% or higher across those 8 attempts — not just pass once. This is a deliberate design choice. A single lucky result does not mean you are ready. A sustained 85% running average does. Our platform tracks this in real time so you always know exactly where you stand.

Every question in the course — whether you answer correctly or incorrectly — includes a detailed explanation of why the correct answer is correct. When you get a question wrong, the explanation walks you through the reasoning, so you understand the concept, not just the answer. This is how real learning happens, and it is what separates our platform from basic practice test tools.

Our format is built on the same principles used in professional trades curriculum development — task-aligned content, mastery-based progression, and continuous feedback through remediation. The 85% running average threshold ensures you are genuinely prepared before you write. We update every course monthly based on client feedback, curriculum revisions, and industry input. We encourage you to read our client reviews on each trade page.

Every course is reviewed and updated monthly. Updates are driven by three things: feedback from clients who have written the exam, changes to the Red Seal Occupational Standards, and advances in how we deliver the course experience. You are never studying from a course that has been left to go stale.

Yes. XLR8ed Learning is available on iPhone and Android. Download the iOS app from the Apple App Store and the Android app from Google Play. Links are available on every trade page.

Every course is structured task by task according to the Red Seal Occupational Standards (RSOS) published by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship for each trade. This means the curriculum you study maps directly to the task areas and sub-tasks that appear on the Red Seal exam for your trade. You can see the full task area breakdown on each trade page.

Exam Rewrite and the C2C Plan

The Commitment to Completion Plan — C2C Plan — is our ongoing exam preparation offering for tradespeople who want guaranteed support until they pass their Red Seal exam. When you enrol in the C2C Plan, you receive 10 weeks of access. If you write your exam and do not pass, we issue coupon codes for 4 additional weeks of access before each subsequent attempt. This repeats until you achieve your Red Seal. No other platform offers this level of commitment.

If you have previously purchased a standard access duration and would like to upgrade to the C2C Plan, contact us at client.support@xlr8edlearning.ca and we will set you up. We will account for your previous enrolment in the arrangement.

If you wrote your exam within the past three months, much of your previous study is still fresh. The most valuable tool available to you is your government-issued exam report. It shows your performance by task area and tells you exactly where your gaps are. We offer an Exam Report Analysis Tool on each trade page — enter your scores and we will generate a personalised study plan showing how to allocate your preparation time across task areas to maximize your results.

The Exam Report Analysis Tool takes your task area scores from your government-issued Red Seal exam report and calculates a personalized study time recommendation for each task area based on your performance gaps. You enter your scores, the tool generates your analysis, and we deliver a PDF of your personalized study plan to your email address. The tool is available on every trade page.

The passing score for all Red Seal exams is 70%. However, we do not recommend aiming for 70%. Our platform is designed to get you to a sustained 85% running average — because exam writers who are consistently performing at 85% in preparation do not typically struggle to clear 70% on exam day. Aim higher than the minimum.

Yes. If there were specific questions or topics on your exam that you found difficult or want to understand better, email us at client.support@xlr8edlearning.ca with a rough description of the topic or question. You do not need to reproduce the question word for word — a general sense of the topic is enough. We will do our best to provide clarity.

Absolutely. Email us at client.support@xlr8edlearning.ca and we will help you put together a study plan based on your situation — whether you are preparing for your first attempt or planning a rewrite. We are here to help you pass.
